Qasr Bashir – a desert castle of Jordan

“Qasr Bashir” – is one of Jordan’s castles hidden in the dessert as if forgotten in time. It is located about 100 kilometres south of Amman between the Dead Sea Highway and the Desert Highway.

The castle is in the middle of nowhere and a few people, even locals, know of its existence. The castle was built between 293 AD and 305 AD by the Romans to defend the southern border of the Roman Empire against the attacks of the Bedouin tribes in the region.

The inside of the castle is almost completely destroyed. Only the outside falling-apart walls and towers are shaping its outskirts.

Some hundred meters away from the castle you will find an ancient water reservoir.

No doubt it is a great privilege to visit such an ancient place. We arrived there in the late afternoon. The beauty of the sun-set couldn’t be described with simple words – leaning against the stones of the tower and observing the splendid colours of the sky against the golden desert. This is magic.
